After attending the University of Houston and receiving his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, Eric Youn earned a Master of Social Work and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington. Eric Youn has served as a Professor of Social Work at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 2007. Dr. Youn has also pursued a career in social work and has become a leader in the field, specifically concerning relief for victims of human trafficking.
A horrific form of modern-day slavery, human trafficking is a pervasive problem, affecting approximately 12 million victims today. Eric Youn is the Case Manager for two federal investigations into human trafficking in his home state of Hawaii. In each case, the victim has been granted refugee status, and as the Case Manager, Youn works with the victims to help them recover emotionally and socially.
Eric Youn has also published articles and spoken about research technology in the academic field of social work. Along with Jo Ann R. Coe Regan, Youn wrote “Past, present, and future trends in teaching clinical skills through web-based learning environments,” a paper advocating the integration of distance learning into the academic community. Eric Youn also wrote and published “The Relationship Between Technology Content in a Masters of Social Work Curriculum and Technology Use in Social Work Practice: A Qualitative Research Study” in Volume 25 of the Journal of Technology in Human Services.
Eric Youn resides in Honolulu, where he enjoys active outdoor pursuits like running, lacrosse, and competitive tennis.
